In the shadow of the state legislature of the State of Arizona, where AZ SB1070 was concocted out of racial animus and blatant anti-Mexican prejudice, the Human Rights Commission of Los Comités de Defensa del Barrio will hold a press conference on Friday to support the call to repeal AZ SB1070, and to further demand that the State of Arizona recognize and respect the basic Human Rights of all Migrant Workers and their Families.

In particular, the Comités de Defensa del Barrio will demand respect for the Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples as articulated in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007) and in affirmation of the Article 23 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states:

Article 23.  (1) Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.

The mandate of priority for the CDB Human Rights Commission is to define and denounce the systematic violation of Human Rights of Migrant Workers and their Families in Arizona that has been institutionalized by AZ SB1070 resulting in blatant racial profiling and discriminatory policing across the state.  As mechanism of accountability, the CDB Human Rights Commission will institute the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the General Assembly on December 10, 1948 as the standard for addressing and defining the human rights issues of priority concern for the Comités de Defensa del Barrio.
