BROOKLYN, NY, Nov. 16, 2020 -  Two peaceful demonstrations will be held this week in Brooklyn, NY to raise awareness of crimes against humanity in Mexico, and their connection to General Cienfuegos and United States’ policies. Antonio Tizapa and supporters of the families of the Ayotzinapa 43 will gather outside the Brooklyn Federal Court Building on Wednesday morning during General Cienfuegos’ appearance before Judge Carol Bagley Amon. There will be an earlier demonstration, on Tuesday evening, at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where the General is currently an inmate.

The recent indictment of General Salvador Cienfuegos in New York on charges of money laundering and drug trafficking revealed the blurred lines between organized crime groups and Mexican security forces and government officials. Cienfuegos, who served as defense secretary from 2012 to 2018 under President Enrique Peña Nieto, has long been accused of human rights abuses in Mexico. Cienfuegos obstructed the truth in the case of Ayotzinapa, refusing to allow the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) to interview soldiers involved in the 2014 attacks in Iguala where 6 students and civilians were killed, 40 wounded, and 43 student teachers were forcibly disappeared. Cienfuegos also rejected accusations that his soldiers were culpable in the massacre of 22 civilians in the town of Tlatlaya in the state of Mexico in 2014. Human rights organizations in Mexico later revealed evidence that the military order was to kill.

Funding, weapons, and training for the drug war in Mexico through the Mérida Initiative is provided by the United States on the condition that the aid does not result in human rights abuses. Though the U. S. government closely monitors events in Mexico, including the cases of Tlatlaya and Ayotzinapa, only a small amount of funding was withheld after the violence in Iguala, while at the same time the U.S. fulfilled requests for additional funding to the same security forces accused of incurring the human rights violations. The militarization of the drug war is big business for the United States and protects its investments under trade agreements. The U.S. benefits from a permanent war, at whatever cost to Mexican citizens; inflicting terror on communities, and driving migration as innocent people seek asylum in the United States from the violence it is helping to perpetuate, as it increasingly provides support, arms, and diplomatic cover.

Antonio Tizapa, a Mexican immigrant and South Brooklyn resident, is the father of Jorge Antonio Tizapa Legideño, one of the 43 forcibly disappeared students from the Escuela Normal Rural Raúl Isidro Burgos de Ayotzinapa who were attacked in Iguala, Guerrero on September 26-27, 2014. Mr. Tizapa is the founder of Running for Ayotzinapa 43, an international community of amateur athletes based in NYC, who use the platform of sports to promote a dialogue and consciousness concerning human rights violations worldwide.
