Press Conference Today

 Date: Wednesday July 18, 2012
Time: 10:00 a.m.
Location: TONATIERRA  (802 N. 7th Street)

Before SB1070 section 2b goes into effect next week the plaintiffs of the racial profiling law suit Valle del Sol vs. Arizona, including TONATIERRA, filed a preliminary injunction on Tuesday July 17 in an attempt to stop the ongoing community devastation caused by SB1070 and the proliferation of abuse by local police empowered to become ICE agents by the ruling. The plaintiffs have asked Judge Susan Bolton to stop the section from into going into effect under the Equal Protection Under the Law portion of the U.S. Constitution.

“It is a racially charged war of attrition against dark skinned people, regardless of their origins. We hope this preliminary injunction temporarily stops it,” said Sylvia Herrera from the Esperanza Barrio Defense Committee.

The Barrio Defense Committees (CDB) will have a series of actions this week to bring attention to the racial profiling effects SB1070 and the organized community response by the Comités de Defensa del Barrio.
Friday July 20: Hundreds of affected community members will rally in front of the U.S. Airway Arena to protest Singer Vicente Fernandez coming to play in Arizona despite the Boycott against SB1070 and depositing thousands of dollars into the Arizona War Chest against Mexican looking people. We are also protesting Budweiser sponsorship.

Saturday July 21st: 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Mariachi Concert by Jose de Jesus Gomez from Chicago, former friend of Vicente Fernandez who denounces Vicente for selling out his people, he will also sing outside the U.S. Airways arena on Friday.

Massive Know Your Rights seminar given by the Law Firm of Alcock and Associates to members of the community at TONATIERRA 802 N. 7th Street in Phoenix.

Report Back by Attorney Annie Lai on the Melendrez vs. Arpaio Case.

Monday July 23rd: Racial Profiling by City of Phoenix Police: Hundreds of community members will bring forward evidence of the practice with tickets issued by Phoenix Police Department Officers. Many of the infractions were for “No License” with no other moving violation. Many of them were transferred to ICE by officers claiming the authority of SB1070.
